Community-based, consumer-driven, non-residential organizations that help break down the physical, social, and attitudinal barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from achieving their desired independence and participation in community life. Services are generally free of charge and include referral, peer counseling, independent living skills training, advocacy, and a variety of services based on the needs of the population.

Provides a variety of services to individuals with disabilities of employable age. NJ Transit’s para-transit system provides service comparable to the local bus service. This curb–to-curb service is specifically for those whose disability prevents them from using the local fixed route bus service.

Each county operates a para-transit system to serve its seniors and residents with disabilities. An application process must be completed before service can begin and advance notice is necessary in order for transportation to be arranged. Services provided vary by county.
