  • IB Humanities Courses for All

IB (International Baccalaureate) is a comprehensive program recognized worldwide. All BCA students take some IB courses in the humanities. Others may choose to pursue the full IB Diploma, which requires a balanced set of courses across six subject areas.

IB courses emphasize inquiry, writing, research, and critical thinking, with assessments that include essays, projects, oral presentations, and exams. In addition, the program requires participation in creativity, activity, and service projects, along with a major research essay, to help students grow as well-rounded, globally minded learners.

As IB humanities courses stress inquiry, critical thinking, and making connections across disciplines, BCA's faculty has chosen to offer all of its most rigorous upper-level humanities courses using the IB curriculum -- including English, History, and World Language.

  • IB Diploma Opportunities

The IB Diploma is internationally recognized and is the gold standard for students interested in pursuing university internationally.

Many of BCA's academies provide opportunities for students to go beyond just taking IB courses and to receive an IB Diploma

An IB Diploma is a unique, differentiating opportunity offered by the Bergen County Academies. No other public school in the county offers the IB Diploma.

Access to the diploma varies by academy at BCA:

    • ABF, ACAHA: Easiest to integrate into academy course sequence.
    • AEDT, ATCS, AVPA: Possible to integrate into the academy course sequence.
    • AAST, AMST: Diploma program not currently available.

There are more routes to satisfying the IB diploma requirements depending upon the student's language of study:

    • Spanish and French: More IB diploma course options (Students may take HL in their language, satisfying part of the diploma's HL requirement)
    • Mandarin: Fewer IB diploma course options (HL courses are not offered in Mandarin, therefore the student must take HL courses in other subject areas)
