Middle School Math Whizzes

NTID

Irakli D., Matthew M., and Benjamin N. were selected to represent SHIP Midland Park in an annual math competition at National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID).  The students spent their lunch periods with their advisor, Ms. Makowski, practicing various concepts and complex problem-solving puzzles.  Finally, after months of preparation, they embarked on a 7-hour long ride to Rochester for the math competition! Accompanied by their coaches Ms. Makowski and Mr. Liulakis, the team arrived at their destination and received a warm welcome from the NTID Math Committee and met other deaf and hard-of-hearing students from across the United States and even Canada!
Months of preparation paid off for the SHIP Midland Park team! Out of 40 teams, they scored 8th place! Individually, Irakli, scored third place in the Individual Countdown Round out of nearly 200 students!  Ben and Matthew’s scores both landed them in the top 20! This trip was a wonderful experience for the students; they worked hard to achieve an academic goal, gain exposure to college, and make new friends from various cultural backgrounds. The team celebrated their victory at Trampoline Park.  SHIP SHIP HOORAY!
