    Nanotechnology Explorations

    Course Description

The Chemistry Department is offering a hands-on lab-based summer introductory course called Nanotechnology Explorations. Students will explore and master lab practices of this interdisciplinary science via four different modules of inquiry-based, group activities.  The topics and laboratory experiments included in the course are:

    • Demonstration and characterization of superhydrophobic nanostructures utilizing contact angle measurements.
    • Nanochemical synthesis of gold nanorods, as well as ferrofluids, and their characterization with dynamic light scattering and ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy.
    • Assembly and testing of dye-sensitized nanostructured solar cells.
    • Fabrication of opal structures via controlled growth of organic polymers.

The 8-day experience will involve 5-hour work days from 9 AM until 2 PM including a 45-minute lunch period. This course introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to start successful research projects in nanoscience and will culminate with group presentations. However, it does NOT replace any required coursework in our Chemistry/Nanotechnology Research program.
